Three Oilfield Companies Named to "100 Best Companies to Work For" List

February 06, 2010

Fortune Magazine has published its annual America's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list, which includes three oilfield drilling and production companies. Another surprise: All three companies work in North Texas' Barnett Shale. The companies appearing on the list include Devon Energy (20th), Chesapeake Energy (34th) and EOG Resources, Inc. (67th).

Devon, headquartered in Oklahoma City, is the largest producer in Barnett Shale and has 550 out of its 3,900 employees working there. This is the third consecutive year Devon made the Fortune list. The ranking comes from an anonymous employee survey done by Great Place to Work Institute. The oilfield company enjoys low turnover while encouraging its employees to do the right thing.

Devon employees say the CEO and president are "accessible, ethical and caring" as reported in the Fortune 100 listing. Fortune also recognized the company on its "Most Admire Companies" list.

Also with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Chesapeake Energy moved up to the number 34 spot from last year's number 73 slot. Fort Worth houses the company's regional office with 850 employees. The growing company currently has around 8,200 employees and plans to fill 300 open positions. The company matches up to 15% of an employee's pay on 401 (k). It also offers stock grants and medical and dental care at headquarters. You can check out the Chesapeake Energy's Fortune listing.

For the fourth year in a row, Enron spinoff EOG made the Fortune list. The natural gas company has also received recognition from the magazine in the categories of "Top Pay," "Best Health Care Benefits" and "Never Having a Layoff." 350 of EOG's 1,725 employees work in Barnett Shale. One drilling engineer boasted that CEO Mark Papa knows his name and treats him like a colleague. View Houston's EOG's Fortune listing.
